“An oligarchy is taking shape in America”
In case you missed it! Biden gave the 15th Official Presidential Farewell Address on January 15. A post-radio and TV broadcast presidential tradition, the farewell address is intended to do two things: 1) share the accomplishments of the outgoing president and 2) give the American people a final warning (how inspiring).
Biden issued several warnings, but most notably he cautioned that “an oligarchy is taking shape in America.” In related news, “oligarch” became a trending Google search the following day. Going forward, I think Democrats should start steering clear of words that end up trending Google searches the next day (at least people are tuning in)! So follow along as we break down Joe Biden’s final warning to the American people.
“Extreme wealth, power, & influence”
Simply put, an oligarchy is a government run by a small number of people (“rule of few!”). There’s only one way these people are decided: when someone owns an unequal amount of wealth, oligarchies say they’re entitled to an equal amount of power (that’s Aristotle!). In an oligarchy, power is concentrated on the extremely wealthy and highly influential.
“… threatens our entire democracy,…
our basic rights and freedoms and a fair shot for everyone to get ahead.” Biden is warning the American people that an oligarchy will end democracy. Think about it: oligarchs by definition are unequal. This means our democracy is not equal, and the very existence of inequality will cause tension between those in power and those not (this is more Aristotle!).
When a wealthy few hold power, they will choose to run the government in ways that benefit themselves and their fellow oligarchs. If unchecked, oligarchies lead to worsening work conditions for blue-collar employees, policies being influenced by the same people voting for them, and an ever-widening wealth gap (I can’t take all this Aristotle!).
“We see the consequences all across America”
So how serious is this warning? Looking at the current administration: in addition to the 13 billionaires in Trump’s cabinet, the three richest men in the world could be found front row at his inauguration. It’s clear that wealth brings influence, but this concept certainly isn’t new (stay tuned for “A Hot Girl’s Brief History of The American Oligarchy!”). Lobbyists continue to pay off congressmen, billionaires infiltrate our government, and nationally known political candidates are still selected via tax brackets. Historically, oligarchies are overtaken by revolution. Only time will tell for the United States.
